Advice cash saves Bury youth centres

Youth Work
Five youth centres in Bury will remain open after the council agreed to merge them with the local Connexions service.

The future of the Elton Youth Centre and New Kershaw Centre in Bury, the Phoenix Centre in Prestwich, the Radcliffe Y-Zone and the Shuttle Centre in Whitefield had been placed in doubt when the council announced it needed to cut youth service expenditure by £200,000.

But following campaigning by local young people, the council agreed to review the decision to either close or pass over the running of the centres to the voluntary sector.

Now the council has decided to use advice and guidance funding to help keep the centres open.
