BRIEFING: Research Report - School exclusion

1 min read
All pupils excluded from school for more than 15 consecutive days must receive full-time and appropriate education. But how is this Government requirement working in practice?

The National Foundation for Educational Research has published interim findings from phase one of a research study funded by the Local Government Association.

The findings of Good practice in the provision of full-time education for excluded pupils are based on the responses of 60 local education authority officers with responsibility in the area.

The foundation found there was a lack of clarity over the requirements for full-time provision for pupils excluded for more than 15 days, and over what is meant by the number of "taught" hours. Education authorities gave various figures from 18 hours to more than 25 hours.

The report indicates that the majority of authorities were "usually" able to meet the full-time provision requirements, but there was a minority that felt they were struggling to do so.
