Briefing: Research report - Autism at school

The National Autistic Society is highlighting the need for teachers to support children who suffer at school as a result of their condition.

More than 40 per cent of children with autism have been bullied atschool and, while one in 110 children has autism, there is norequirement for teachers to be trained in how to deal with thecondition. In May, the National Autistic Society launched its MakeSchool Make Sense campaign, designed to improve education for childrenwith autism. Research backing up its headline statistics was publishedlast week.

Joshua, 16, has Asperger's syndrome and was one of 28 children and youngpeople interviewed for the report.

He says: "I just got to the point where school became a phobia. As soonas I got in the car to go to school, I'd start having a panicattack."
