2 mins read
The Government wants to make rural and outdoor activities more attractive to the public to encourage physical activity.

Why are you wearing walking boots? I am about to go walking, as it is soeasy for a White, middle-class, middle-aged, middle-income, middleEnglander to do.

Is this something to do with reclaiming the countryside for the masses? It's really about trying to make rural or just local outdoor activitiesattractive to members of all communities in Britain. It starts from arealisation, duly communicated in the Government's rural white paper, that a lot of people fail to take advantage of outdoor activity. Withpublic concern about obesity and levels of physical activity matchingthe growth of our waistlines, it's time to act.

And do you have any answers? The Countryside Agency undertook adiversity review. It spoke to a number of different groups - people withdisabilities, Black and ethnic minority groups, those who live in innercities and young people - to find out what would make a visit to thecountryside more attractive. The Department for Environment, Food andRural Affairs used the results of those discussions to develop adiversity plan, which is out for consultation.
