Nottingham's Black Regional Initiative in Theatre (BRIT) received 19,600 from the Home Front Recall scheme to fund the Back in the Day project.
The project, which starts in October, will involve 25 young people.
The Home Front scheme, a joint initiative by the Big Lottery Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund, has allocated 22.3m to commemorate the part played by different communities during the Second World War.
Beatrice Udeh, the programmer and producer for BRIT at the Nottingham Playhouse, said: "A lot of young people do not know how to relate to their elders. We want to change that."
And Mick McGrath, head of the East Midlands region at the Big Lottery Fund, said: "We want young people to realise that old people had to make sacrifices because of the war."
