BME: Award attracts more BME young

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award has experienced a 28 per cent increase in black and minority ethnic young people taking part, following a project with the Pears Foundation.

The scheme worked to engage young people in east Lancashire and west Yorkshire, and included adverts in the Asian press.

Overall, the organisation has had a 3.9 per cent increase in the number of young people entering the programme. However, the popularity of the award has created waiting lists of up to 18 months in some areas, due to a lack of leaders.

Sarah Lindsell, UK services director, said: "We are launching a new IT project this month to be implemented by 2009 that will help leaders to manage young people's progress and help more young people to complete the award."
