Birth to Three Matters: Let them grow their own way

Henrietta Bond reports on a new way of recognising how each child develops.

A baby is sitting in front of a mirror. The nursery worker sits behind her, joining in as she picks out her own and the worker's reflection.

"In the past, we'd have sat to one side and said: 'Who's that?' But now we sit behind the children and interact with them," explains creche worker, Lauren Horrocks, from Harvey Early Years Centre in Bolton.

"I learned this from the self-awareness section of the framework; if you're there with the child it's easier for them to recognise which reflection is them," she continues. "The framework's really good because it makes you think more about what you do and why you do it."
