BIG INTERVIEW: The Jewish way to volunteer - Paul Silk, project director, Hand-in-Hand

Another Hebrew term, Gemilut Chasidim, meaning "acts of loving kindness", also applies to Silk's philosophy of volunteering. But he's well aware of what motivates young people to become volunteers, coming from a background of volunteering himself, with two stints on kibbutzim in Israel. He says: "Young people primarily volunteer because they will have a good time." These stints came either side of time as a youth worker at ULPSNYC-Netzer, the youth movement of the Union of Liberal and Progressive Synagogues.

Earlier this month Silk took up the reins as project director at Hand-in-Hand, the volunteering division of the Jewish Lads' and Girls' Brigade.
