She has now been working with young people for 18 years, and was recently appointed an MBE in the Queen's birthday honours. Creativity plays a very big part in Begum's work with young Asians in Blackburn, Lancashire.
The former art teacher with a degree in 3D design from Wolverhampton University uses arts and drama to help young people of Asian heritage address important issues in their lives.
Begum runs after-school projects held at three sites in Blackburn and a number of activity groups for Asian women aged 11 to 24 to help them tackle issues and have fun (see panel). "We've just done a project on women and clothes through the ages, we hold classical dance classes, and our performing arts group works with professionals to do plays and dance routines," she says.
