What is less usual is that her years of work have led to her being appointed MBE in the New Year Honours List. For Vary the recognition came as something of a surprise.
"As youth and community workers, in my experience, we don't single ourselves out," she says. "Maybe that is just the nature of the people who are involved in the work. You are always supporting other people, whether colleagues or the young people you are working with."
Vary grew up in Chorleywood in Hertfordshire and was involved in the local council of youth there. When she left school, with no qualifications, she volunteered for Community Service Volunteers (CSV).
