It isn't the most obvious career move, but for Thorogood it makes sense. "What is always in the back of most military officers' minds is that you are doing good," he says. "I loved the idea of an organisation that is also a force for good, but in a different area."
Thorogood's other passion is football. During his 30-year stint with the air force, the logistics specialist had a secondary role running RAF football. It was through this that he came into contact with the Football Foundation.
He was approached by Dave Richards, chairman of the foundation and the FA Premier League, who was interested in using RAF facilities as part of the Positive Futures activity programme. A link was set up, and when the Football Foundation job came up Thorogood jumped at it. He was appointed in April last year.
