Beyond Bricks Community Arts Scheme, Birmingham and Sandwell

1 min read Education Extra-curricular
What are they doing? School children and local residents in Birmingham and Sandwell are working on eight creative projects to improve local community spaces as part of an arts-based regeneration scheme.

The programme, called Beyond Bricks, is being run by arts organisation Multistory and funded by regeneration agency Urban Living in partnership with the Arts Council England.

What does it involve? The programme is focused on improving community cohesion and allowing local people to take action to improve their neighbourhoods together. Pupils and residents living in the Soho ward of Handsworth are working to design a sculpture, which is intended to transform an under-used area in Waver Hill Park into a vibrant community space.

How is it going? Urban Living's director of community strategy and engagement Adam Carey says the Beyond Bricks scheme is proving successful. He adds that the Waver Hill Park project will allow future generations to enjoy their local open spaces. "Recent years have seen the decline of Waver Hill Park," he explains. "Through this project we're not only engaging with local residents but also bringing communities back to the park."
