Behaviour: Charity's mentor project a success

A mentoring programme is successfully helping primary schoolchildren with behavioural problems, reports an evaluation published last week.

Chance UK's programme provides mentors for five- to 11-year-olds who arethought to be likely to commit crime or anti-social behaviour in thefuture. Each child gets a mentor for a year.

The evaluation of the programme reported that 45 per cent of thechildren involved in the project during 2005 were no longer classifiedas having a behavioural difficulty at the end.

Gracia McGrath, chief executive officer at Chance UK, said: "Our latestevaluation has shown that having a well-structured programme over thecourse of a year gives children the opportunity to reflect on theirbehaviour and start to make positive changes."

However, parents questioned for the evaluation said a year with a mentorwas too short.
