Be prepared to work weekends

Last Friday I was at one of our clubs spending the evening with a group of young people. We didn't do that much. We talked a bit. We had something to eat. And, once again, I got thrashed at ten-pin bowling on the Nintendo Wii.

It may not have been cutting-edge youth work. The flipchart had been put away and there wasn't an accredited award in sight. But apparently this is exactly what the public wants from its youth services.

Government crime and communities adviser Louise Casey's report into engaging communities in the fight against crime was published in June. Over the past eight months some 15,000 people have given their views on how to make communities safer and raise public confidence in the criminal justice system.

As usual there are the calls for more places for young people to go. But when asked when they should be available, 91 per cent of people said it was important that youth facilities were open on Friday and Saturday evenings. Compare that to the one per cent who think opening on a Monday night is important.
