For a couple of years the media have been plagued by a nasty infection of stories about moving groups of young people from public places using a sonic device with a high-pitched whine.

Sunderland Echo reports that Durham County Council is unhappy. A press release from the council confirms that the director of children's services thinks the device is discriminatory against young people. It could be an infringement of their human rights, says David Williams.

He reckons a device designed to cause deliberate discomfort to any other group within the community would immediately be seen as offensive and unacceptable. Well said.
