There has been a lot of noise about the value of children's play, particularly around this year's National Playday on 4 August. It's not rocket science, but it's now getting the attention it deserves. Children need quality play opportunities to become confident young people and adults.
I took part in the first National Playday 16 years ago, as a volunteer worker on a playbus. Funding was sparse, but it was great fun. The spirit of the event was the most important thing, and it was worth it as children were able to take part in a day of free activities. Local ice cream companies even dropped their prices.
