Back Page: My week - Even at the dinner party, paedophobia is rife

1 min read
Sunday: Supper with a group of acquaintances. The host is a professional chef so the food is good. I come away realising we have a huge job addressing the "paedophobia" that exists.

Monday: Accompany my 16-year-old son and his girlfriend for a Bank Holiday visit to watch I am Legend. A fascinating film, while dark and horrific in places, it ends full of hope for the future. I wish Will Smith was Prime Minister. Start reading Great Hatred, Little Room, Jonathan Powell's gripping account of the Northern Ireland peace negotiations, a great story of hope overcoming deadlock.

Tuesday: Have a positive meeting about participatory budgeting. Wiltshire's move to one council brings real opportunities to ensure young people's voices are heard. Arranged a number of Association of Principal Youth & Community Officers meetings for next week. The youth opportunity fund "wise heads" meeting is in the evening - the director, cabinet member and I are presented with decisions about which projects will get funding. As usual, a professional, incisive deliberation by the young people.
