Southend is certainly on the move. Not content with having the longest pier in the world, as well as the highest concentration of principal youth officers in England, it now wants to become the cultural capital of the east of England by 2010.

Now this is no small ambition. If you've been to visit the area recently, you'll know we've got some way to go before we can lay claim to regional cultural significance. But we've got six years to get there and a positive attitude, so who knows what we can achieve.

In fact, things are already looking up. This week I was invited to the opening night of designfront, apparently the biggest design show ever held outside London.
