I've just come back from a plain language training course at the council. Although most of us think we can communicate clearly, I'm not entirely convinced.

With more and more of our work demanding some form of written output, perhaps we should take writing more seriously. From funding bids to publicity fliers, from endless emails to action plans, we write all sorts of documents for all sorts of audiences.

So back to my course. Many members of the group were horrified to hear that you should no longer use capitals in business letters (THE WRITTEN EQUIVALENT OF SHOUTING). And let's not even talk about the commotion caused by the news that you can start a sentence with 'And'.
