Once again, I've been able to spend some time over the summer months out and about in Southend visiting our youth centres. I value these visits because they give me the opportunity to get out from behind my desk and take a long, hard look at the condition of our buildings, facilities and equipment.

It's no secret that their condition isn't always as good as we would want it to be. But things won't last forever in busy environments, and a rolling programme of replacement and renewal is essential.

So I was pleased to read in the Youth Matters green paper that the Government proposes to allocate some extra capital funding to help upgrade existing places for young people to go, and to provide new facilities where none exist. Investment in youth facilities hasn't been a national priority for years, so this particular proposal is welcome news.
