"Children are in peril from flesh-eating MRSA that thrives in nurseries," screams a headline in The Daily Mail, which manages to squeeze every ounce of panic-inducing drama out of findings reported to the Federation of Infection Societies' annual conference.

The bug may sound like something from Doctor Who but it is all too real, as Dr Marina Morgan, a researcher at Exeter University, explains. And children are most in danger because "they play together very closely, they don't wash their hands and aren't very disinfectable".

Never fear, the answer may be at hand in the form of Marks and Spencers' anti-MRSA pyjamas - another Mail story. The Sleep Safe nightwear contains silver thread. "Silver is known for its infection-fighting properties and has been used by the military," we learn from an M&S spokesman.

But hopes are dashed by Tony Kitchen of MRSA Support. "It cannot be a super-suit and probably doesn't make a jot of difference," he tells the paper.
