The menacing letter from animal rights extremists gave the directors of Leapfrog Nurseries two weeks to sever their commercial links with Huntingdon Life Sciences. The alternative was to "get ready for your life and the lives of those you love to become a living hell".

Britain's biggest nursery company didn't wait two weeks. It issued astatement withdrawing the childcare voucher scheme to the animal testingcompany "with immediate effect". Leapfrog was not the only company toreceive a letter. Nor was it the only one to reply by cutting links withthe firm. Channel 4 News reported that at least 16 companies receivedthe same letter. The web site of a campaign group reported that in asingle day four suppliers announced they were refusing to have anythingmore do to with the testing company.

But Leapfrog Nurseries received far and away the most news coverage,even though, as the BBC reported, a Leapfrog spokesman said they werenot aware that any children of Huntingdon Life Sciences' staff attendedtheir nurseries. On this basis, the practical impact of the announcementwas pretty much zilch.
