Working with kids? You need a passport for that job. Perhaps.

Althea Efunshile of the DfES last week revealed that a photocard-style ID for children workers was being discussed.

Words like "early stages" and "feasibility being discussed" were heavily emphasised when she gave evidence to the Bichard inquiry.

But a bit of logical questioning at the inquiry revealed that any photocard or passport would not only be unnecessary, but possibly harmful.

It went like this. A photocard simply on its own is obviously no good.

It can be forged and can't be updated. To be at all useful, prospective employers would have to check its validity against a central computer record system. This would need to be continually updated, with the police and others adding any new details.
