A slurry lagoon is like a swimming pool full of cow muck. If you fall in you can drown. Next time you are overwhelmed with concern for children's safety, just be glad you don't work in the agricultural sector.

That was an extract from a leaflet for seven- to 11-year-olds called 10 ways you can get hurt on the farm. It covers building dens with straw bales, playing in grain stores, and the specific risks of tractors, poisons and reversing trailers.

The accompanying leaflet for adults is just as scary. It advises: "Children under 13 years old must not drive or operate tractors or other farm machinery."

The implication that 13-year-olds and above are allowed to drive tractors will be an eye-opener to many townies. As soon as the teachers union, NASUWT, gets to hear of it, they will doubtless issue a statement warning their members against trips to rural areas. Not through concern for the children's safety, but for their own.
