Children are being warned there is a chance their lives will be painfully destroyed when the Gambling Act 2005 comes into force in September.

Stability will disappear, money will be tight and debts will grow as thehousehold income goes to fuel their parent's addiction to gambling inthe new casinos. A spokesperson said: "We don't yet know who thesechildren will be. It's just the luck of the draw, really."

Just joking. There is an ominous silence over the social impact onchildren of the UK's gambling expansion. Baroness Howe of Idlicote triedto find out in the Lords. She asked the Government about the cost ofsupporting the children of gambling addicts.

The minister, Lord Davies of Oldham, batted it away. While he agreed itwas necessary to balance the pleasures from the increase in gamblingagainst the impact on children, he said: "We think that we have reachedthe right balance."
