BACK PAGE: Hindsight - Proud to be a social worker

Especially now that our columnist is no longer doing social work.

I know there are many committed, hard working and caring teachers in the school where I started managing a student support project three years ago, and the frustrations they experience are easy to understand. But having previously spent 15 years in social work, I sometimes feel like an outsider who doesn't understand why things are done as they are, doesn't speak the same language and whose perspective will always be marginalised.

The concept of child-centred practice is not understood by many teachers and I grow tired of explaining such things as rights, choices, participation and partnership when they seem to be fundamental to working with children. But am I looking back through rose-tinted glasses?
