Which organisations do you liaise with? Connexions, local authority youth services and the Government Office for the North West. We also manage the local Connexions voluntary sector forum. We support the Children and Youth Alliance, a partnership body of all statutory, voluntary and independent providers in Oldham.
What are the qualities that you need to do this job? Independence of thought, tenacity and a thick skin. An ability to assess risk is important for encouraging young people to take on their own projects.
How did you get into this line of work? I started out in London, working on adventure playgrounds in Kilburn, and on a play scheme on a barge in Paddington. I moved to Oldham to work as a local authority centre-based youth worker and also worked as a youth officer at the Council for Race Equality in Tameside.
