A key part of my job is to ensure young people from the Traveller community are given the same opportunities as other young people. They often need assistance with job applications and finding training.
I help them get to where they want to be both career-wise and socially.
If there are issues holding them back I can put them in touch with services.
These include sexual health problems, pregnancy, drug prevention, legal advice and housing.
I also help young people engage with recreational activities.
How did you get the job? My knowledge and experience of the Traveller community set me in good stead. I am a showman's son and come from a family of fairground Travellers. I travelled with fairs when I was young. This is a major reason why working with the Traveller community is a large part of my role. But that was not a requirement of the job. I was offered the role having gained a first class honours teaching degree and experience of working in a private residential children's home.
