Autistic young get chance to go it alone

1 min read Health Social Care
Young people with autistic spectrum disorders are being given the chance to live independently thanks to a project run by social care charity the Together Trust and Bolton Council.

The Positive Steps project supports young people who live at the Together Trust's Pocket Nook children's home as they move into a home of their own.

The first two young people have just moved into a new home, which was found by the Council. Pocket Nook cares for autistic young people aged 15 to 18, who find it difficult to live without support. Autism can affect communication and interaction with other people.

In the months leading up to the young person turning 18, staff at Pocket Nook work with Bolton Council's adult services to determine the best way to support them.

As part of Positive Steps, young people who are judged to be suitable for independent living get the opportunity to move into a house with less support.
