Asylum Seekers: Kent asks for more than 7.1m offer

Kent council is asking the Government for more money to help it meet the cost of looking after asylum seekers, including children, despite an offer of 7.1m from the Home Office.

A spokeswoman for the council said it was still pushing for the full 14m it had requested, which includes 2.8m to deal with unaccompanied asylum-seeking children. The Government's offer depends on Kent dropping its lawsuit over the issue.

It follows a row over asylum costs, which Kent argues should be met by the Home Office because asylum is a national issue (Children Now, 16-22 February).
