Asylum seekers: Capital's boroughs in funding boost

London boroughs will have more money to spend on helping asylum-seeking children, after brokering a deal with the Home Office.

The 28 boroughs have welcomed a 11.6m funding boost from theGovernment to help meet the costs of supporting asylum-seeking adults,families and unaccompanied children.

Representative body London Council and the Local Government Associationpersuaded the Home Office to commit the funding last week. It follows ayear of lobbying from London boroughs who have argued that under a HomeOffice settlement proposed last November they would face a 13.7mshortfall.

"We are delighted the Home Office has accepted our arguments over thespecial circumstances facing London's local authorities and the servicesthey deliver for asylum seekers," said chairman of London CouncilsMerrick Cockell.
