Asylum Seekers: London boroughs must support kids

London boroughs should consider how duties contained in the Children Act can be built into services for unaccompanied refugee and asylum-seeking children, according to a report from the mayor of London.

The report, Offering more than they borrow: refugee children in London, says every child should receive a full assessment of need and support unless there are exceptional circumstances.

The report also raises protection concerns, including a lack of monitoring of children who are accompanied by an adult who is not their parent or usual carer.

Meanwhile, the Lords have decided not to amend a controversial piece of legislation in the Asylum and Immigration Bill that withdraws benefit from families whose asylum applications fail, which critics say would force children to be taken into care.
