Asylum Seekers: Policy is linked to rise in drug use

Government policy is exposing young refugees and asylum seekers to factors known to increase the risk of drug use, says a report by the Mayor of London.

Exclusion from school is stated as one risk factor, but many asylum-seeking children are not attending school.

Unaccompanied minors were also found to be particularly vulnerable to mental health difficulties due to separation from their family, compounded by other traumas, such as war.

A spokeswoman for the Mayor said no decision had been made yet on what action to take.
