Kent resumes accepting unaccompanied asylum-seeking children

Kent County Council has resumed taking responsibility for unaccompanied asylum-seeking children following talks with the Home Office.

In June, the council announced for the second time in 10 months that it could no longer “safely” take on lone child refugees arriving on boats across the Channel.

Similar action was taken between August and December 2020 for the same reason.

However, council leader Roger Gough has warned that it is “unlikely” that the council will be able to accept all children arriving at Dover.

“We are in very advanced discussions with the Home Office to develop a safe and sustainable solution for Kent to support those who arrive in the county.
