Ask the expert - What's your problem?

The fear of a youth work licence, when young people don't find comedy funny and maintaining appropriate standards of youth art. Tracie Trimmer-Platman has the answers.

Q: I have run a youth club for more than 20 years. I know that there are moves to make youth workers qualified and more professional. I've recently read that there is going to be a licence applied to clubs and workers. I don't think anyone realises what effect this will have on our ability to exist. We depend on volunteers and people's good will and decision-makers don't understand this.

A: I must admit that I feel stuck in the middle on this issue in some ways. I recognise that there are many well-meaning, dedicated volunteers whose lives have often revolved around the delivery of activities and opportunities for young people across the country. However, we must acknowledge that there is a bit of a hotchpotch of qualifications, standards, levels of experience and delivery mechanisms. Unlike most other professions, we are surrounded by a lack of clarity about what our role is, who does it and how it is monitored.
