Ask the Expert: Supporting asylum-seekers

1 min read Social Care Asylum

We have a high number of unaccompanied asylum-seekers in our authority and have always had good levels of support services to meet their needs. But recent cuts have left a shortfall. I am worried we won’t have enough resources to provide adequate support to these children.

All services are under pressure to reduce costs and improve services, so it is worth asking your colleagues in surrounding authorities what they are doing. It would also be worth forming a regional network to share ideas and support each other.

It is important that the services you do provide are the ones that meet the priority needs of your asylum-seeking community, so meet with them and involve them in the discussion. Voluntary and community groups may also be able to help, so link the co-ordinating body for the voluntary service with the asylum group.
