Ask the Expert: Supporting children's services lead members

1 min read Management

A new lead member for children’s services has been appointed in our council. At a time when we are going through rapid structural change, how can we get him up to speed quickly?

The partnership between the lead member and the director and senior staff is crucial to success. Make sure you meet the member soon and set out the key issues for the authority – both successes and challenges.

Then set up regular meetings and a tour of key parts of the service so the new member can get a sense of the work and priorities. It is also important to set out a calendar of key dates – budget, inspection, audits, data collection, local safeguarding children board meetings, and so on. You can then set out a programme of briefings to help the member become more informed and comfortable with their workload.
