Our nursery has a new chef and I need to give her some guidance on the menus. I’m no foodie, so what can I do?

The patterns of eating set in the early years influence children for the rest of their lives. The School Food Trust recently provided guidance and menus for those working with younger children, which gives a sensible steer on how to balance healthy eating. The website Change for Life is also helpful, especially around things like five-a-day.

Small children burn a lot of energy and require a good balance of carbohydrates and zinc. I like them to have homemade cakes and scones, especially at teatime when they are flagging. We also put fresh vegetables in the role-play areas and this has encouraged an interest in vegetables.
