The heads of the Royal Opera House, the National Theatre, the Tate, the South Bank Centre, and Manchester City Galleries launched a document making their case for further investment last week. Values and Vision: The Contribution of Culture outlines the successes of the past, and calls for continuing support in the future to meet a wide range of goals.
Among these is the ambitious target to make sure that 95 per cent of young people "attend, engage with or take part in a cultural event or activity each year". Commentators suggested that the current figure is about 60 per cent.
Tony Hall, executive director of the Royal Opera House, said arts have a role to play in widening young people's experience, but there is also an economic case for investment. "The things we stand for also teach the sorts of skills we need to succeed in the future," he said.
