Arts beat: Songs for Europe

Young people from the Maidstone Youth Forum in Kent invited peers from Germany, France, Belgium, Finland and Cyprus to attend a recent European youth conference. Each country fronted a discussion about the issues that affect young people, such as unemployment, crime, alcohol abuse and racism, and about the different ways each country tackles those issues. The group then worked with a local voluntary arts project to produce a music CD, which will be promoted on radio stations across Europe. Maidstone Youth Forum received 5,000 from the Department for Education and Skills consultation fund to hold the conference. For more information, go to www.maidbyyouth.org.uk.
