Analysis: Voluntary services - Smaller charities under real threat

A contract culture is threatening the survival of small charities that work with the nation's most vulnerable children and young people, according to a study of voluntary services. Sue Learner examines the findings, and asks what can be done.

Small voluntary organisations working with the most vulnerable children are struggling to get funding and are under threat "in this new era of tenders and commissioned services", according to research released today (9 July).

The report says, as with the voluntary and community sector in general, voluntary children and young people's services are "increasingly affected by increased levels of public service commissioning which favours larger organisations and enhances private-sector involvement".

Organisations excluded

Every Organisation Matters, published by the National Council of Voluntary Child Care Organisations (NCVCCO) and the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services (NCVYS), found smaller organisations are being excluded by the way government funding is run.
