Analysis: Trade Unions - No let-up in the battle over wages

Buoyed by the support for its recent strike action, the Community and Youth Workers' Union (CYWU) was in an optimistic mood as it gathered in Derry for its recent annual national conference.

The strong turnout for the first strike in the union's 66-year history, coupled with a sea of fresh faces, helped to make the event a radical departure from that of previous years.

Terry Mattinson, branch secretary of the federation of the union's Lancashire branches, felt the conference marked a turning point for the organisation.

"There was a lot of positive thinking: there's a sense of collectivity and strength among the workers. The attendance was good and there were lots of new, younger delegates. It was excellent," he says.
