The annual Community and Youth Workers' Union (CYWU) conference is normally a chance to debate the stance the union should take on key youth work issues, and how it is going to address problems facing the profession. But this year there was a shift in direction, with much of the talk inside and outside the main hall concentrating on the future of the union itself.
The main reason for this was the proposed merger with the Transport and General Workers' Union (T&G). One of the motions was to ballot the membership on the merger, and the organisers set aside time for an address from Jack Dromey, the deputy general secretary of T&G, and a panel discussion with him before the main debate on the "union merger with T&G" motion.
