There have been conflicting reports about the success of theGovernment's teenage pregnancy strategy. With the UK still well behindthe rest of Europe, Asha Goveas takes a look at the figures andinvestigates whether progress is really being made.

Professionals could be forgiven for getting a bit confused about whetheror not the Government's teenage pregnancy strategy is working, membersof the public even more so.

Over the last few weeks and months there has been a deluge of newspaperreports on the failure of the strategy. At the same time, many expertsare still insisting it is effective (Children Now, 6-12 July).

The debate hit the headlines more than a month ago when Beverley Hughes,newly appointed as children's minister, admitted the Government could dono more to reduce pregnancy rates and called on parents to help.
