Analysis - Practice: Teenage pregnancy - Youth services can helptackle teen pregnancy

Teenage mums are rarely out of the headlines for long, yet the Government's teenage pregnancy strategy's successes often receive little publicity.

The Department for Education and Skills (DfES), in its latest guidance, highlighted the positive impact a "well-resourced" youth service could have on reducing teenage pregnancies through the provision of activities for young people (YPN, 26 July-1 August,p5).

This is old news to the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. By giving responsibility for tackling teenage pregnancy to its youth support and development service, the borough has achieved an impressive reduction rate in under-18 conceptions of 42.1 per cent between 1998 and 2004, one of the highest reductions in the country.
