Ethnic minorities: Council highlights teen pregnancy

A Brent Council forum has called on the Government to work more closely with the Black and minority ethnic community to address the high rate of teenage pregnancies in the borough.

Brent saw an 11.7 per cent rise in teenage conceptions from 1998 to 2004. Black Caribbean young women were highlighted as an area of concern.

But Liberal Democrat councillor Daniel Bessong, chair of the borough's Black and Minority Ethnic Consultative Forum, which held a community meeting on teenage pregnancy last week, said a distinction should be made between underage pregnancies and pregnant teenagers over 16.
