Since 2003 the multi-billion pound Supporting People funding stream has provided a crucial prop to help organisations tackle youth homelessness.

But the release of the Communities and Local Government department's strategy for the England-wide scheme last week prompted concerns (YPN, 27 June-3 July, p2). Organisations working with young people are concerned they could lose out as local authorities take a more central role in directing the fund via local area agreements.

Sophie Livingstone, head of policy at umbrella group Foyer, says: "Supporting People funding has really helped to stabilise foyers and grow their operations. At the moment all local authorities are being told what to spend it on, but in 2009 the ringfencing will be lifted."
