Policy & Practice: Briefing - More support needed for thevulnerable

2 mins read

Supporting People? Isn't that all about old people? Not at all - it is the government programme to help councils co-ordinate support services and find appropriate housing for vulnerable people. Obviously a lot of that is about older people but it is also a major factor for bodies that provide housing for young people in the transition to independence, such as Foyers and the YMCA. Some 30 per cent of their income might come through Supporting People grants.

That's great. Well yes, though it hasn't always seemed an easy arrangement. The Foyer Federation last year said cuts to the programme were leaving some Foyers to face "insurmountable challenges" as more young people have more complex needs at a younger age. Responding to this needs a holistic approach, states the federation, which in turn requires a long-term sustainable funding base. A further issue has been the bureaucracy associated with accreditation under the scheme. Some progress has been made here with government agreement that Foyer Federation accreditation can now be used to "passport" Foyers through the Supporting People quality assessment framework.
