Citizenship education? Interested but not in half measures. That seemed to be the message from young people to the Government about efforts to foster a sense of British citizenship, according to a survey released last week (YPN, 14-20 April, p2).
The Home Office report, Citizenship: young people's perspectives, certainly undermines the stereotype of the apathetic teenager, highlighting how young people are interested in current affairs and regularly turn to TV, newspapers and radio for information.
Yet the study also reveals high levels of scepticism and frustration about efforts to encourage young people to become active citizens. In particular, the researchers found young people were cynical about mainstream politics, frustrated with their lack of influence, and highly critical of tokenistic efforts to involve them.
