When a recent NOP survey revealed that more than half of 16- to 24-year-old young men use text messages for dumping partners, there were a few outraged howls from some sections of the media.
But the near universal use of SMS among young people - according to the survey, 96 per cent of young people regularly send text messages - illustrates that the technology is a central aspect of young people's experience.
The NOP's figure of 67 million texts sent on the day A-level results came out last year shows what a key communication tool it is for the young.
So it is a surprise that texting is not used more often in youth work.
